About Trench System
The Western Front stretched 700 km from Switzerland to the North Sea. Trenches zigzagged to prevent enfilading fire. No-mans land between lines could be as narrow as 30 meters. Rats grew as big as cats eating the dead. Trench foot, gas, and constant shelling made life hell. Over 8 million soldiers died in the trenches.
