Over 110 million landmines are buried in 70 countries. They kill or maim 5,000 people per year, mostly civilians, long after wars end. The Ottawa Treaty banned them in 1997, but major powers including the US, Russia, and China did not sign. Demining costs 1,000 dollars per mine.
